Thinning a tree is to remove a certain percentage of the inner crown, this is great for light filtration and to remove weight from the branches without reducing the overall size of the tree. It is also great for aesthetics as it cleans the crown out making it look much cleaner and neater.

What is Ash Dieback?

Ash dieback is a type of fungus which origins are Asian. It doesn’t cause much damage on its native ash trees, Manchurian ash or the Chinese ash. However, its introduction to Europe about 30 years ago has devastated the European ash because our native ash species did not evolve with the fungus. This means it has no natural defense against it.

The Signs

Ash Dieback fungus spores can blow tens of miles away. They land on leaves, stick to and then penetrate into the leaf and beyond. The fungus then grows inside the tree, eventually blocking its water transport systems, causing it to die.
Ash Dieback can effect ash trees of all ages. All affected trees will have these symptoms:

  • Leaves develop dark patches in the summer.
  • They then wilt and discolour to black. Leaves might shed early.
  • Dieback of the shoots and leaves is visible in the summer.
  • Lesions develop where branches meet the trunk. These are often diamond-shaped and dark brown.
  • Inner bark looks brownish-grey under the lesions.
  • New growth from previously dormant buds further down the trunk. This is known as epicormic growth and is a common response to stress in trees.

What To Do?

On estimate we are going to lose around 80% of our ash trees in the UK. This is going to have a hugely devastating impact on our landscape and the biodiversity of our woodlands. It is vital if you suspect you ash is infected you call a reputable tree surgeon so they can properly manage dead or dying ash trees.

HONEY FUNGUS

‘Armilliaria Mellea’ also know as Honey Fungus, is a group of parasitic Fungi.

The Signs

  • Decaying roots
  • White fungus between the bark and the wood
  • Sudden death of a plant (typically a younger plant)
  • Gradual death of a more mature plant
  • Honey coloured mushroom that appear at the base of a tree in Autum

What To Do?

The fungus spreads quickly and infects neighbouring shrubs and trees through the soil. It is important that you spot it and call a reputable tree surgery company to come in and remove the effected organism before the fungus spreads over your whole garden.
